Monday, February 23    Liberty 19    Monarchs 14
In another battle of defenses, the Liberty was able to withstand a second-half charge by the Monarchs to pull out the win. The Liberty jumped out to seven-point lead, 11-4, by halftime, largely due to a 3-point shot hit by Shelly Williams that really pumped up the team. Sarah Waksmunski played superb defense in the middle, and also led all Liberty scorers by banking home 6 points. Shelly finished with 5 points and numerous rebounds, and Laura Weber triggered the Liberty offense by providing excellent ball handling from her point guard position and chipping in 4 points as well. Caitlin Kelly and Katie Fagner rounded out the scoring with 2 points each. With Addie Bullin and Hannah Blackburn scrapping and hustling on the defensive end of the court, the Liberty was able to put together a strong overall team effort. The Monarchs put up a tough fight despite being short-handed and forced to play with only 5 players. Matching the Liberty basket for basket in the second half of the contest, the Monarchs mounted a strong come from behind charge. Ashley Stone, Michelle McConaughey, and Takeiya Rouse each scored 4 points to lead the Monarchs offensively. Cheryl Farves and Kristen Johnston provided the defensive pressure, and inspired the team in a strong showing that just fell a little short in the end.

Sparks    Mystics
The large and varied fan base, near and far, of the Sparks propelled them to win a close game. Fans from young to old came to cheer on their favorite teams. For the Mystics, Nikki's mom has been there through thick and thin! She made cupcakes for a job well done and gave them out to both teams! The mystics played a hard defensive game. Morgan and Monica lead the Mystics with steals, while Megan did a great defensive job. Nichelle handled the ball well, scoring 4 points along with numerous assists. Nikki showed her outside shooting ability by scoring 6 points. Senita shot well, also finishing with 6 points.
The Sparks started off slow, but the huge contingent of fan support "SPARKED" the Sparks. Amber, with her family supporting the team by cheering, score-keeping, and Mom (Penny) assisting with coaching, played a superb defensive game, stealing the ball in key situations. Mindy, with her family cheering like wild, continued playing great at both guard and forward. Mickey, with her family - including her very proud big brothers madly cheering, played an awesome defensive game. Rachel, with her Dad faithfully rooting her on, came alive in the 4th quarter. She had 6 points, including 2 clutch free throws to put the game out of reach in the final minute. Chaley, with a huge family attending, finally made it on time! She had 8 points in addition to her many steals. Mary, with the oldest fan in attendance,(her 85 year old grandfather) her Aunt in the Netherlands impatiently waiting for this write-up, and her extremely vocal parents in the stands, played a tremendous game before fouling out in the 4th quarter. She had 5 points along with some great interceptions and steals.
Overall it was a great hard fought game with the Sparks barely edging out the Mystics.

After a tied first half the Monarchs pulled away behind Kelley Hardgrove's 10 third quarter points to defeat the Mystics. Sunday Feb. 17    Monarchs 30    Sparks 17
The Monarchs avenged a loss to the Sparks with a strong offensive performance. Ashley Stone and Michelle McConnaughey completed the Monarch scoring with 6 and 2 points respectively. Takieya Rouse contributed with her usual strong defensive game and ball handling. Kristen Johnston keeps improving with each game by distributing the ball and making steals. The Sparks, down 16-4 at halftime, withstood the first half flurry and outscored the Monarchs in the third quarter. Chalay Temy scored 6 points in that quarter and led the team with 11 points in the game. Rachel Spence, Molly Flynn, and Mary Burrell chipped in 2 points a piece. Amber Thomison contributed clutch rebounds and Mickey White played an impressively strong and aggressive game.

Takieya Rouse and Kristen Johnston's tenacious defense provided turnovers for the team to capitalize on. Even though Cheryl Farves didn't score she was a monster under the boards and prevented Liberty scoring. The Liberty struggled to get on the scoring track. Sarah Waksmunski and Caitlin Kelly each scored a basket. Shelley Williams, Addie Bullin, Hannah Blackburn, and Katie Fagner were tough-minded and gave 100 percent effort in rebounding and defense. The Liberty defeated the Monarchs twice this season, but it just wasn't their night.

Shelly Williams led the Liberty with 6 points, Caitlin Kelly had 3 and Sarah Waksmunski 2.

Rockers 25    Sting 13    (Feb.15)
The third time was the charm as the Rockers finally defeated the Sting 25-13. After two previous close losses the Rockers used pressure defense to upset the timing of the Sting's offense. Marcia Biddle led all scorers with 13 points and 5 great assists, Charlie Costello chipped in 8 and was big on the boards. Bianca and Breanna Berryman added a bucket each and played excellent defense on Amanda Peck, the Sting's leading scorer. Ashley Smith and Natalie Cooper also played excellent defense and played big on the boards. Despite double coverage Amanda Peck scored all 13 points for the Sting. Liz Belknap, Kayla Hakley, and Maggie Breeden played tough defense for the Sting. The playoffs start next week and it wouldn't surprise me to see both of these teams in the finals. Good luck to all the Girls.

Friday, 15 February    Sting 22    Mystics 10
The Mystics deserve a great deal of credit for Friday nights game. The mystics began with 4 players and ended with 3. Sonita Boateng contibuted 8 points and Michelle Parker added two of her own. In a hard fought physical game, the Sparks narrowly defeated the Rockers. Marcia lead the Rockers with 12 points. Charlie had 6, and Bianca and Natalie each had 2. The rebounding of Kelly helped. Ashley had a great defensive game at guard, and Breanna had quite a few steals. The Sparks played an excellent defensive game with Amber Thomison grabbing multiple rebounds. Mindy Flynn, playing both guard and forward, kept the Rockers out of the lane and also stole the ball many times. Rachel Spence, although ill, struggled through the game and managed to add 4 points. Holly Flynn, playing heads up ball, also had 4 points. An off night for Mary Burrell, she had as many points as she did fouls (4), but her positive attitude made a big difference in team spirit. Chaley Terry played an all around good game and added 13 points. All Sparks players shot the ball. Another well played game by both teams, but after dropping 2 close games to the Rockers, the Sparks finally came out on top!

Sting 26    Rockers 20    Saturday, 9 February
Kelly Carpenter's 8 point second half was the difference in a very intense Sting - Rockers battle! The Sting were down 15 to 8 at half time. Tough defense by Shayla Cashwell, Elizabeth Belknap, Kayla Hafley, Mikaela Heddinger, helped slow down the Rockers and allow Kelly's 8 point spurt to complement Amanda Pecks 14 points. Maggie Breedon and Mikaela Heddinger contributed 2 points of thier own. The Rockers had a good team scoring effort, which was led by Breanna Berryman who had 9 points. Marcia Biddle put in 3, while Charlie Costello added 6 and Bianca Berryman added 2. Kelly Hannan, and Natalie Cooper were their Rocker defensive forces. Sunday, Feb. 10    Mystics 13    Liberty 6
The Mystics combined stingy defense with just enough outside shooting to avenge an earlier loss to the Liberty. Sanita Boateng played outstanding individual defense for the Mystics and Nikki Grimm provided 7 points from the field, including a key 3-pointer to put the game out of reach. Nichelle Parker steadied the Mystics’ offense with her assured ballhandling, especially against the Liberty’s press in the fourth quarter. Thursday, Feb. 7    Mystics 11    Monarchs 9
Nichelle Parker’s 3-pointer to close the third quarter was the last basket for the Mystics, but they made their 11-6 lead at that point stand up. Both teams played aggressive defense in the final period, and Cheryl Farves’ 3 fourth-period points were not quite enough for the Monarchs. The Rockers won their first game of the season with a hardfought 23-17 win over the Mystics.   Marcia Biddle led the rockers with 17 points and 12 rebounds.   Breanna Berryman and her sister Bianca rounded out the Rockers scoring with 4 and 2 points each.   Natalie Cooper, Kelly Hannan contributed on the boards and Ashley and Becka Kush played great defense.   The Mystics were led by Michelle Parker who scored all 18 points for the Mystics.   Megan Jennings, Monica Roebuck, Michelle Dunleavy, and Morgan Bean all contributed with great defense and strong rebounding.   This was the first all Girls basketball game in EPWBA and it was a great sign of things to come for this league.
